Minutes

 

 

Voting members present: Diane Beckham, Daniel Parker, Brian Ferguson, Michael Hoffman, Coleman Lewis, Jef Richards, Rusty Todd, Doug Toney.

 

Voting members absent: Urton Anderson, Jonathan Lee, Shawn Rosenzweig.

 

Non-voting members present: Meredith Best, Teresa Brett, Jason Hunter, Kathy Lawrence, Ryan Pittman, Trevor Rosen, Chris Tolle. 

 

Non-voting members absent: Alex Hammond, Ryan Hengst, Rachel Zoch.

 

Professional staff present: Mary Felps, Richard Finnell, Dan Knight, Steve Metze, Frank Serpas, Jerry Thompson.

       

Visitors present: Adam Agardy, Tyler Carson, Trisha Hanley, Bob Jones, P. Ryan Petkoff. 

 

The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by TSP Board President Michael Hoffman. As there were many visitors who wished to comment on the appointments of managing editors of The Daily Texan, Hoffman suggested the Agenda be arranged in order to consider these appointments as the first item of business.

 

I. Appointment of summer 2003 Daily Texan managing editor.

 

Hoffman reported two applicants, Robert Jones and Nicolas Martinez, submitted applications for the position. Further, Hoffman said Jones no longer wished to be considered for the fall 2003 managing editor position.

 

Robert Jones addressed the members of the Board concerning his application and his plans for The Daily Texan for the summer of 2003.

 

Nicolas Martinez addressed the members of the Board concerning his application and his plans for The Daily Texan for the summer of 2003.

 

Hoffman adjourned the general meeting for an executive session. Following the executive session, Hoffman re-convened the general meeting.

 

            MOTION NO. 1: Ferguson moved to re-open applications and appoint a summer 2003 managing editor

            on a date to be scheduled later. The motion passed.

 

II. Appointment of fall 2003 Daily Texan managing editor.

 

Hoffman reported two applicants, Elizabeth Egeland and P. Ryan Petkoff, submitted applications for Daily Texan managing editor for the fall semester 2003.

 

Elizabeth Egeland addressed the members of the Board concerning her application and her plans for The Daily Texan for the fall semester 2003.

 

P. Ryan Petkoff addressed the members of the Board concerning his application and his plans for The Daily Texan for the fall semester 2003.

 

Hoffman adjourned the general meeting in order to conduct an executive session. Following the executive session, Hoffman re-convened the general meeting.

 

            MOTION NO. 2: Ferguson moved to appoint P. Ryan Petkoff managing editor of The Daily Texan for the

            2003 fall semester. The motion passed.

 

III. Appointment of KVR-TV station manager for 2003-2004.

 

Hoffman reported two applicants, Adam Agardy and Trisha Hanley, submitted applications for KVR-TV station manager for 2003-2004.

 

Adam Agardy addressed the members of the Board concerning his application and his plans for KVR-TV for 2003-2004.

 

Trisha Hanley addressed the members of the Board concerning her application and her plans for KVR-TV for 2003-2004.

 

Hoffman adjourned the general meeting for an executive session. Following the executive session, Hoffman re-convened the general meeting.

 

            MOTION NO. 3: Beckham moved to appoint Adam Agardy station manager of KVR-TV for 2003-2004.

            The motion passed.

 

IV. Pulp! magazine presentation.

 

Tyler J. Carson addressed the members of the Board concerning the possibility of TSP adopting Pulp! magazine as an official TSP publication. Carson stated the following: the publication needs hosted web space which TSP can provide; the staff needs space in which to work; TSP would continue printing Pulp! magazine on a cost plus overhead basis; the staff has no conflicts with editorial adviser review of the publication; and the publication has a funding commitment from the College of Liberal Arts Honors Program.

 

Hoffman requested proof in writing from the College of Liberal Arts Honors Program describing the funding commitment. Lawrence said she would continue working with Carson to further investigate the matter and will report further information to the members of the Board.

 

            MOTION NO. 4: Richards moved to continue work on a proposal concerning Pulp! magazineÕs possible

            adoption as an official TSP publication. The motion passed.

 

           

V. Daily Texan audit.

 

Lawrence discussed the audit report with the members of the Board. She said improved methods of distribution of the Cactus Yearbook were under consideration and plans to compile a safety manual for the TSP production operation were underway.

 

            MOTION NO. 5: Ferguson moved to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed.
