Minutes

 

 

Voting members present: Urton Anderson, Diane Beckham, Bill Cornwell, Danny Parker, Jonathan Lee, Coleman Lewis, Cale McDowell, Zack McKamie, Brian OÕReilly, Jef Richards, Rusty Todd.

 

Non-voting members present: Adam Agardy, Rachel Bagley, John Dalton, Kevin Kushner, Kathy Lawrence, Wes Ferguson, Moneeza Rahman.

 

Non-voting members absent: Todd Nienkerk, Alexis Wolstein.  

 

Professional staff present: Mary Felps, Richard Finnell, John Foxworth, Evelyn Gardner, Jean Hogue, Dan Knight, Frank Serpas, Jerry Thompson.

 

Visitors present: Brian Ferguson, Jim George, Chris Ha, Ben Heath, Erin Keck, Rob Russell.

       

Following an executive session meeting of the Board which began at 2:00 p.m., TSP Board President Coleman Lewis called the open meeting to order at 2:35 p.m.

 

I. Approval of the TSP Board Minutes for January 23, 2004.

 

            MOTION NO. 1: Lee moved to approve the Minutes of the January 23, 2004, TSP Board

            meeting. The motion passed.

 

II. Report of the executive committee.

 

Todd reported the executive committee had not met since the last TSP Board meeting but requested the members of the Board consider proposals for the Cactus Yearbook in 2004-05. Lawrence said two proposals had been received: one from Walsworth Publishing Company and one from Taylor Publishing Company. Lawrence discussed the proposals with the members of the Board concluding the proposal from Walsworth Publishing Company is the most favorable proposal for TSP.

 

            MOTION NO. 2: Richards moved to accept the proposal from Walsworth Publishing Company

            for the 2004-05 Cactus Yearbook. The motion passed.

 

III. Follow-up on student hiring practices.

 

Lawrence called attention to the revised document concerning student hiring practices distributed at the beginning of the meeting. Todd requested discussion of the document be postponed until the next meeting of the Board.

 

IV. Certification of TSP Board candidates.

 

a. Student member, College of Communication, places 2 and 3. Lewis reported one additional application for certification had been received. The application, submitted by Ashley Montgomery, included the following notation: ÒIncomplete application turned in after 5:00 p.m., February 3, 2004, deadline. Applicant returned with application and academic certification complete at 10:30 a.m. on February 4, 2004.Ó Further, Montgomery was not present due to a family health emergency in Dallas.

            MOTION NO. 3: McDowell moved to certify the application of Ashley Montgomery to stand for

            election for the College of Communication, places 2 and 3. The motion failed.

 

b. Student member, At-large, place 1. Lewis reported one additional application had been received from Robert Russell for the At-large, place 1 position.

 

            MOTION NO. 4: Richards moved to certify the application of Robert Russell to stand for election

            for the At-large, place 1 position on the TSP Board. The motion passed.

 

V. Certification of candidates for editor of The Daily Texan.

Lewis said three students submitted application for certification to stand for election for editor of The Daily Texan. The  candidates include Brian Ferguson, Ben Heath, and Erin Keck. Ferguson addressed the members of the Board requesting certification.

 

            MOTION NO. 5: Lee moved to open discussion concerning Brian FergusonÕs request to be

            certified to stand for election for editor of The Daily Texan. The motion passed.

 

Discussion followed.

 

            MOTION NO. 6: Anderson moved to certify Brian Ferguson to stand for election for editor of

            The Daily Texan. A roll call vote followed; the motion passed with six votes in favor of passage

            and five votes not in favor of passage.

 

            MOTION NO. 7: Beckham moved to certify Ben Heath to stand for election for editor of The

            Daily Texan. The motion passed.

 

            MOTION NO. 8: McDowell moved to certify Erin Keck to stand for election for editor of The

            Daily Texan. The motion passed.

 

            MOTION NO. 9: Beckham moved to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed.
