Professional staff present: Tim Serpas, Jack Simons, Frank Serpas, Wayne Roche, Richard Finnell, John Foxworth, Mary Baird-Wilcock, Dan Knight,

Guests: Sara Ostrosky, Zach Warmbrodt, Claire Harlin, Lynn Davis

TSP Board President A.J. Bauer called the meeting to order at 3:07 p.m.

I. Business

The February minutes were approved.

With a motion by Chicotsky and a second by Newton, the election results were certified.

II. Reports

Bauer reported that the Executive Committee discussed the HermesÕs report to the Board, but took no action on it.

The only addition to the student manager reports came from Corral who wanted to note that TSTV and the Texan would be working together to cover SXSW events over Spring Break.

III. Reorganization

Lawrence reported that she has been working with insurance companies to get an estimate for coverage of TSM assets.  She also reported that she expected help from UT System regarding risk management and discounting by being part of their policy.

Discussion began regarding the new version of the rules on the role of the advisers for the various media units.  Hermes asked how quickly an item approved by the Board could be added to the agenda of the Regents, but it came out that adopting the rules would not require further action.

With this in mind, Richards moved that the new rules be adopted.  After some discussion to determine that the draft was sufficient, Brummer seconded the motion and it was passed.  At RichardsÕ request, the Board asked that Finnell continue reading all Texan content until libel insurance becomes effective.  Bauer felt that this would be unnecessary, but made no motion to change the BoardÕs action.

Bauer asked Board members to be ready to vote on the new handbook at the next meeting.

IV. Convergence

Regarding the break up of the reserve fund, Bauer postponed discussion in the absence of Todd.

Discussion returned to HermesÕs letter regarding TSMÕs unitsÕ responsibility to one another.  There was much theoretical discussion about how units can work together and the idea of a unified-brand Web site.  Bauer asked the student managers to meet to see what can be shared and to be cooperative in their efforts.

With a motion by Anderson and a second by Richards, the meeting was adjourned.

RE:  March activities

This month has been characterized by completion of work on the 2007-08 budget before you today, along with additional details in implementing the new Declaration of Trust, many of which are before you today.

Activities, medium by medium, include:

--A number of KVRX students worked through Spring Break to bring about the stationÕs most involved South by Southwest presence ever. Booking two full-day showcases and making sure all the little details were in place, Station Manager Loren Seeger really

stepped up to the plate and delivered.  On hand to run sound, help transport

equipment and always ready to plug Local Live and KVRX in between bands, Philip

Goetz helped tremendously during the Bella Blue day show. Business Manager

Kate Lipinski did the legwork to attract and invite multiple non-profit

organizations to table and attend our Independence Brewery SXSW day showcase,

making it a true KVRX community event.  Bird's Barbershop also donated 100 percent of

their profits from t-shirt sales at their SXSW day show (more than  300 people attended), back to KVRX.  Kate, by the way, also was accepted as an intern at the SXSW boot camp.

Back at the station, Keith Rutledge, Oguz Herdin, Carter Francis, Andrew Shearer

and a handful of KVRX newbies pulled off another successful run of "3x5", with more than 20 SXSW bands recording sessions for later broadcast and potentially for future Local Live CD compilations.

It was a great week for publicity and promotion, with the station appearing on the front page of the Life & Arts section of the Austin American Statesman on March 15, romoting two station showcases in an article about boutiques and live music.

KVRXÕs annual pledge drive will be the first week of April, and Adviser Mary Baird is eager for TSM board members to suggest potential new business pledges.  The

goal for business pledges this year is $5,000.

--Cactus Goodfellow and Outstanding Student Committees each selected 12 award winners.  They will be honored at the Student Leadership Award Ceremony on April 13.  John Foxworth will be taking their photos next week for an award display table at the event, as well as for pages in the yearbook. The Cactus staff planned a water balloon toss game for the 40 Acres Fest.  Prizes of the Cactus t-shirts, cups, pencils, and assorted baked goods will be awarded as prizes.  Book orders also were to be taken at the event. A yearbook preview party also has been planned for later this semester, as well as a graduation event at the Ex-Students Association. The staff is still selling advertising for the book, as well as organization pages, while sales remain at about 1,800.

--At TSM Advertising, March is a month of mixed results. While the student ROP sales for The Daily Texan will eclipse the quota for the first time this year, our two professional sales staff are $22,000 behind quota for the month. Both expect healing sales in April and into the summer months. Two advertising supplements, Utmost and Involved,  in March leveraged sizable commitments for the Texan.

Joan Bowerman continues to produce great numbers for National. With several days left, Joan is 58 percent or $12,000 over quota for the month. She's 9 percent, or $1,500, over quota for Campus. National Agencies are only 6 percent, or $2,550, short for the month, as of March 20.

Classified is lagging with only 25 percent of quota for the month. The advent of other free classified sites -- CraigsList, StudentRent.com, StudentHousingDepot.com, ApartmentGuide.com, HeyLonghorn.com, UTRent.com, WalkToCampus.com and UTstudentapartments.com – are adding significantly to this problem. I might add that Statesman classifieds and many other college classifieds are down substantially. What's curious is that classified display ads are healthy. The average Classified Section is heavily populated with display ads. Perhaps there's a movement on the part of typical line and word advertisers to buy more attractive units. This requires further analysis.

KVRX surpassed its annual quota in February and continued to grow another $1,600 in March, while TSTV will receive another $1,000 in March. We are very excited about the launch of "UTmost TV Breaks" and the revenue this might produce for TV before year end.

The On Campus relationship continues to perk along at quota. These are advertisers that typically don't want students so its incremental revenue. Online sales slowed in March but seem to be on pace to make quota for the year.

--Texas Travesty made its advertising goal in March for the first time this year. Travesty alums also have been in contact and hope to plan a 10-year reunion within the next year to 18 months. The Travesty web site hasnÕt been updated since November, but we are hopeful the redesign will be completed shortly.

--TSTV went into spring break with a full slate of programming. Since the station remains on air throughout spring break, regular updates were posted from the women's and men's NCAA tournament in Oklahoma City.  Broadcast quality video was sent via internet, a local host was often added, and the updates were aired and posted to the website the next day.  Jody Conradt's retirement was also announced during break, and TSTV was there to record and broadcast Conradt's announcement via television and web. It was packaged with emotional player reaction as a Special Sports Update. Also during break, TSTV has some of the most complete coverage of the SXSW film festival.  Divided into professional and student film-maker segments, several pieces were posted to the website immediately, and a special-length edition of Sneak Peek will be devoted to it.

--At TSM Photography, the low-end web video camera has not been used, and although Adviser John Foxworth encouraged Texan photographers to take video courses from TSTV earlier in the semester, it appears no one to date has done so. John says the general response is that the web video camera isnÕt Ōgood enoughĶ for Texan photographers, even though their reactions were positive when he made the purchase. John hopes to take the TSTV video classes soon so he can encourage students by doing video projects himself.

John also continues to work on improving archiving of images. A slowly implementing process of having Texan photogs digitally mark images worthy of being saved is now being realized, making it easier to trash studentsÕ unwanted images permanently. This is still time consuming, but better than before.
